About

STAND UP TO RACISM DERBYSHIRE is part of a national organisation which has local groups. We want to bring people together to challenge racism, celebrate diversity and show solidarity with refugees and migrants.

Stand up to Racism was first established in 2014 in, response to the rise of racism both in Britain and across Europe. In 2017 a conference was held in London to launch a broad based anti-racist organisation. This took place in the context of a growing  refugee crisis.

Over 1,300 UK anti-racist activists attended and local groups began to be set up. In Derbyshire we have four: Chesterfield & North Derbyshire, High Peak, Matlock & Derbyshire Dales, and Derby City.

In 2018 SUTR organised marches in London, Glasgow and Cardiff which drew 20,000 people opposing racism, islamophobia, anti-semitism and saying  migrants and refugees are welcome here. Protests took place across Europe and we now have an international conference each year and link up in March for UN Anti-racism Day.

With the explosion of anger following the death of George Floyd last year, we moved quickly to support the Black Lives Matter movement, organising Take the Knee events across the county. We  held two conferences looking at how to decolonise the Education curriculum.

We are currently involved in a number of campaigns and activities:  challenging racist attacks and monuments, promoting diversity in rural areas, exploring Derbyshire’s links to slavery, supporting local Syrian refugee families and Care4Calais.  We work alongside minority-ethnic organisations, trade unions, faith groups and local councils.

We have regular organising meetings and rallies. PLEASE DO GET INVOLVED.
